The Center is located on its own 24-acre site within the Wildewood Professional and Technology Park in California MD. The building is about one-half mile west of Route 235, on Airport Road. The Center is centrally located, approximately six miles north of the Patuxent River Naval Base, 22 miles south of Prince Frederick, and 35 miles south of Waldorf.

Food Services
Lunch will not be provided. There are vending machines in the building and several restaurants near by.

DIRECTIONS TO THE SOUTHERN MD HIGHER ED CENTER

From Patuxent River Naval Air Base: North on Route 235 - 6 miles. Turn Left on Airport Road (at Outback Steak House). Proceed ½ mile on Airport Road. SMHEC is located on the left across from the SMC Airport Runway. SMHEC 44219 Airport Road California, MD 20619

From Solomons: Follow Route 4 across the Bridge into St. Mary’s County. Proceed approximately 4 miles to the intersection of Rt. 4 and Rt. 235. Turn Right (North) on Route 235 At the 2nd light, turn left onto Airport Road (at the Outback Steak House) and proceed ½ mile. Center is on the left.

From Waldorf: Take Route 5 to Route 235 (approximately 22 miles). Follow Route 235 approximately 13 miles to Wildewood Shopping Center (Airport Road). Turn right on Airport Road; Center is ½ mile up the hill on the left.

From the Washington Beltway (College Park): Take Beltway to Route 4 (Pennsylvania Ave) South. Follow approximately 50 miles to Solomons Island. Follow directions above from Solomons Island.

From Washington Beltway (Alexandria): Cross Wilson Bridge into Maryland. Follow Beltway to Route 5. Take Route 5 South to Waldorf. Turn at Route 5 and follow directions above from Waldorf.

From Baltimore: Route 97 to Route 301 South to Route 4 at Upper Marlboro. Take Route 4 South and follow directions above from Solomons Island.

ONCE YOU’VE ARRIVED

Park in any unmarked parking spot, proceed inside, look for the conference registration desk.

DIRECTIONS TO THE NAVY YARD

From DC: Capitol Hill and Mall: Drive east on Independence Avenue; continue east on Pennsylvania. Turn right on 8th St SE. Continue to end of 8th St; Navy Yard complex will be visible on M Street. Turn right on M Street SE. Go two blocks and make a left into the Navy Yard, Isaac Hull Gate, 6th and M St (you will be asked for picture identification).

From Downtown DC: Take 9th Street NW (one way going south) and continue through tunnel under Mall. Take first left after exiting tunnel onto Southwest Freeway (I-395). Take 6th Street SE exit. (Sign also says Navy Yard). Proceed down ramp and continue straight ahead to 8th St. Turn right, go two blocks to M Street SE. Turn right on M Street SE. Go two blocks and make a left into the Navy Yard, Isaac Hull Gate, 6th and M St (you will be asked for picture identification).

From Maryland (Northwest of DC): Take Beltway I-495 to George Washington Parkway. Follow parkway to the 14th St Bridge. At end of Bridge, I-395 bears off to the right and becomes the Southeast-Southwest Freeway. Take the Freeway to 6th Street SE exit--sign also says Navy Yard. Proceed down ramp and continue straight ahead to 8th St. Turn right, go two blocks to M Street SE. Turn right on M Street SE. Go two blocks and make a left into the Navy Yard, Isaac Hull Gate, 6th and M St (you will be asked for picture identification).

From Maryland (Northeast--Annapolis, Baltimore): Take Baltimore-Washington Parkway to I-295. Follow I-295 to Howard Road Exit. Keep left as you exit and make a left at the stop sign. Pass under the highway and make a left at the light. Get back on I-295 north. (This loop is necessary because there is no exit to the 11th Street Bridge going south). Stay right and exit at 11th Street exit (and Downtown). Stay right going over bridge and exit where sign says Navy Yard. At the bottom of the ramp make an immediate left and enter the Navy Yard (11th Street gate). (you will be asked for picture identification).

From Maryland (From Southern Maryland): Take Beltway (I-495) to I-295 (just before you get to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge). Exit at 11th Street Bridge. The sign also says Navy Yard. At the end of the Bridge, exit to the right. At the bottom of the ramp, make an immediate left and enter the Navy Yard gate. Go past guard (you will be asked for picture identification) through the traffic light.

From VA: Follow I-395 across the 14th Street Bridge. At the end of the bridge, I-395 bears off to the right and becomes the Southwest-Southeast Freeway. Take the Freeway to the 6th Street, SE exit. Proceed down ramp and continue straight ahead to 8th Street, SE. Turn right, go two blocks to M Street, SE. Turn right on M Street SE. Go two blocks and make a left into the Navy Yard, Isaac Hull Gate, 6th and M St (you will be asked for picture identification).

From VA (From South Alexandria/Mount Vernon area): Take Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Exit at end of Bridge to I-295. Exit 295 at the 11th Street Bridge. The sign also says NAVY YARD. At the end of the Bridge, exit to the right. At the bottom of the ramp, make an immediate left and enter the NAVY YARD gate. Go past guard (you will be asked for picture identification) through the traffic light.

PARKING

1. Parking for all visitors is located at the “Visitor Parking for AGC Customers” block on the map across from McDonalds restaurant.
 
2.  All non-DoD civilian visitors to the AGC must enter through the 11th and O Street Gate regardless if you are driving your own POV, taking the Metro, bus, or a taxi.
 
3.  DoD civilians who are not NAVSEA or NDW card carriers must also enter through the same procedure as item 2.
 
4.  Active and retired military cardholders can enter the 6th Street (Isaac Hull Gate) on foot and proceed to the Admiral Gooding Center.

METRO DIRECTIONS:

To reach the Navy Yard via public transportation, take Metro's Blue or Orange lines to the Eastern Market Metro stop on Pennsylvania Avenue SE. From there, walk six blocks down 8th Street to the yard or take bus number 90 or 92 on 8th Street. An alternate subway stop is the Navy Yard Metro Station on the Green line, at M and Half Streets SE, nine blocks from the main entrance to the Navy Yard.

SECURITY REQUIREMENTS:

In order to gain access to the Washington Navy Yard, a VALID picture ID must be presented to the gate guard.

All Naval District Washington personnel will be issued and must display a valid picture identification badge. These badges are issued in the Pass and ID Office, upon submission of a Badge Security Control Record, Headquarters NDW Form 5512.5, which has been properly authenticated by a current personnel listing provided to Naval District Washington Security by the individual’s command.

Visitors are defined as persons not assigned, employed or attached to Naval District Washington or tenant commands. Visits will normally be for official business only. Visitors to Naval District Washington installations must possess a valid reason for entry and have proper identification in order to gain access. Visitors must report to the Pass and ID Office upon arrival at the installation.

Buses and vans entering Naval District Washington installations may be stopped at the gates and all occupants checked for valid identification.

Visitors must report to the Pass and ID Office (11th and O Street Gate) upon arrival at the installation.
